In 2020, Matt took a sabbatical and drove his 1985 Westfalia through parts of Mexico and backpacked through Peru and Ecuador. After returning to Washington, he opened Harbor Tree LLC. The goal in opening Harbor Tree LLC was to allow him to work for himself, to support his personal health by being outdoors, and to provide a tree service with transparency and integrity.

Matt is a third generation arborist and has been formally working in the tree care industry on and off since 2001. In July of 2011, Matt graduated from a state endorsed tree trimming apprenticeship. Later, Matt became a climbing instructor for the NW LINE Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee, where apprentices are instructed how to safely prune and remove trees near the power lines.
